The Abel Prize is often referred to as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, and since 2020, LIWLIG has had the honour of producing the official announcement, the portrait film, and the award ceremony. Through TV productions, storytelling, and close collaboration with The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, we have helped highlight the laureates and share their groundbreaking work with the world.

Since 2020, LIWLIG has been fully responsible for planning and executing the announcement, the portrait film, and the award ceremony for the Abel Prize. This includes everything from multi-camera TV production and direction to content production and logistics, always in close partnership with The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
The Abel Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious mathematics awards and is presented annually by The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The prize was established by the Norwegian government in 2002 to honour Niels Henrik Abel, one of the most influential mathematicians in history. The Abel Prize celebrates researchers from around the globe and aims to inspire greater interest in mathematics across society.
The process
The Abel Prize should be a dignified and engaging celebration that highlights the laureate’s work and inspires both young people and adults to explore the world of mathematics. For LIWLIG, the key objectives have been:
- To create a professional and impactful announcement that reaches an international audience.
- To deliver a formal yet captivating award ceremony in the University Aula in Oslo.
- To ensure high-quality TV and film productions, distributed via NRK and YouTube.
LIWLIG has developed a comprehensive production concept that balances high quality and efficient delivery, tailored to the project’s scope and needs.
The Announcement: A multi-camera TV production broadcast live on YouTube.
The Portrait Film: Each year, we send our film team to the laureate’s home country to produce a personal mini-documentary. This year, we travelled to Kyoto, Japan, to portray laureate Masaki Kashiwara.
The Award Ceremony: A formal prize-giving ceremony held at the University Aula in Oslo. The Abel Prize was presented by His Majesty the King of Norway, with Haddy Njie as this year’s host. The ceremony featured artistic performances and was broadcast on NRK and YouTube.
Through our in-house film and TV production team, we delivered high production value within a tight budget, without compromising on quality.
